Chapter 9

No Him without Her

Charlene

“So, you’re really gonna sit there and act like nothing happened tonight, Aaron?” I watched Aaron stumble into my apartment, tossing his keys on the coffee table, then plopping his drunk ass down on the sofa.

He looked up at me, eyes damn near bloodshot red. “Charlene, we’re not gonna keep goin’ in circles. I don’t know what the fuck else you want me to say. I can’t even be in the same room with the girl without you thinkin’ that I’m fuckin’ her.”

Oh, I wanted to throw my clutch purse upside his fuckin’ head. “Aaron, you weren’t just in the same room with the girl, you were damn near fuckin’ humpin’ her on the dance floor.”

Aaron laughed out loud. “What? Man, them hormones got your ass straight trippin’. I’m marrying you in a few days, not her, Charlene. The girl was outside, heartbroken as a muthafucka because Jamie’s ass dumped her yesterday, yo. She was crying over dude, talkin’ about she was nothin’ without him. I hated seeing her like that. I danced with Ne’Vaeh to get the dude’s attention, just to show the girl that he was still in love with her. You said so yourself that she needed love. I was just trying to help her get it back. She doesn’t deserve the shit that she’s been through; you know that.”

I sighed, going over to sit beside Aaron on the couch. When I saw Ne’Vaeh dancing with Aaron that night, I saw red. I was pissed. She always got everything that she wanted, regardless of whether she knew it. She wanted love, and everybody loved her. Aaron loved her, Jamie loved her—my family loved her. I still couldn’t fathom the thought of being her sister. It still hadn’t fully registered itself in my mind. I cared about Aaron, I loved Aaron, and I adored Aaron. But I was in love with Jamie, my sister’s Jamie. I had no idea how my situation was going to turn out, but I knew that I was in for a hell of a ride if I planned on having Jamie in my life in any kind of way.

I looked at Aaron. He was in love with the girl; I knew he was. Everyone knew he was. It would have hurt more than it did if I didn’t feel the way that I did about Jamie. Jamie could care less about me. He had broken up with Ne’Vaeh to save her from heartbreak when the truth came out about us. But as soon as he saw her just dancing with another man, he was ready to fight to get her back. I knew Jamie and I would never be together, but I was determined to keep him from Ne’Vaeh. I had it set in my mind that if I couldn’t have him, she sure as hell wasn’t getting him. And if letting the truth out about us was going to tear them apart, well, damn it, I was going to do what I had to do.
